About This Substitution

Role in this recipe: Smoky depth, colour, warmth

When you don't have smoked paprika.

4 Substitutes for Smoked Paprika in Vegan Sausage Rolls

1. Regular sweet paprika + few drops liquid smoke

Ratio: 1:1 paprika + 1 - 2 drops liquid smoke

Liquid smoke is very powerful - use sparingly. Produces a convincing smoky paprika flavour.

2. Chipotle powder

Ratio: 1/2 the amount

Smokier and hotter - reduce quantity and expect more heat. Brilliant for Mexican-inspired dishes.

3. Ancho chilli powder

Ratio: 1:1

Dried ancho chillies have a gentle smokiness - a good substitute with less heat than chipotle.

4. Pimentón de la Vera (sweet)

Ratio: 1:1

This IS smoked paprika - if you find this, use it; it's the Spanish original.
