4 Substitutes for Garlic in Mushroom and Ale Pie

1. Garlic powder

Ratio: 1/4 tsp per clove

Completely different flavour when cooked - less pungent, sweeter, evenly distributed. Good for dry rubs.

2. Garlic paste (tube/jar)

Ratio: 1/2 tsp per clove

Preservative-heavy versions taste different - use a quality brand. Convenient but loses some freshness.

3. Asafoetida (hing)

Ratio: Tiny pinch per 2 - 3 cloves

FODMAP-friendly substitute. Very powerful - start with a tiny pinch. Provides the sulphurous depth of alliums.

4. Roasted garlic

Ratio: 1 clove roasted = 1 clove fresh

Mellower, sweeter and almost nutty - use more for the same intensity. Adds a different, deeper dimension.
